For the month of March’s Sanity Bank deposits we are going to focus on meditation. A practice I am a firm believer in. I believe because I didn’t. I’m a skeptic just like everyone else. I am also a believer in “you don’t know unless you try”. What have you got to lose?
I read the perfect quote on meditation. It went like this:
“Meditation isn’t to control your thoughts, it’s so your thoughts don’t control you”
Isn’t that beautiful? So true and wonderful. I meditate twice a day, once in the morning when I first wake up and right before I go to bed at night. A lot of people have asked me what meditation is or what do you do during meditation? Do you not think? Do you fight your thoughts? For me, it’s none of these things.
Watch a movie without sound. You don’t know who said what. You don’t know who did what. You can’t judge or be angry at any one character. You can’t be in love or choose sides with anyone in the film. You’re just watching. Not taking sides. Not judging anyone for what they did. Not trying to get to the bottom of anything or trying to figure out what’s going on. No emotion arises within you. Imagine meditating like this.
From my own practice, this is what I get from meditation. Nothing bothers me, nothing controls me. I have feelings, I’m not a cold hearted prick all the time. I watch and observe, without thought or judgement. Whatever comes my way, I just see it and leave it. I’m talking that guy at work who’s a real piece of shit. Nothing. Let it go. He’s not your problem. The girl who cut in front of you at Uniqlo. She’s a whore. Move on. The lady who cut me off and tripped over my shoe and then called me an asshole. Smile and say “Aren’t you lovely”. Blow her a kiss and move on. These people. They are the negative angry bastards you don’t need. There is no changing them. You. You have to change yourself. You have to find your happy. They never will. You would hope they will. They won’t. They see life as a curse instead of a blessing. You can’t control your thoughts of these people or circumstances coming into your brain but they don’t have to control you. Those things we can’t change and yet we stress over. These are the things you need to change in your mind. Remember last months Sanity Deposits, “What are you letting go of?”.
After a while of meditating these thoughts and visions that cross your mind will be nothing. You won’t have a thought about them, a judgement or a sense of remembering what or why they crossed your mind. They’re just there. Harmless and meaningless. As time goes on this will cross into your daily life. These losers that cross your path in real life will be harmless and meaningless and they will be unable to disturb your peace of mind and happiness. Just like watching a movie with the sound turned down.
I want us to meditate for the month of March for our Sanity Bank. Its worth our time and sanity. Make the time. Don’t give me that “I can’t find the time” bullshit. You can make time to be on your phone 5 hours a day but not 5 minutes to meditate? Yeah, you’re that person. Sit, stand or lay down. Doesn’t matter. It could be while you’re on the toilet, in the shower or on the train to work. When you get up in the morning sit on the edge of your bed. Take the time where you are and make the connection. Close your eyes and watch your silent movie. Whatever comes into your train of thought. Let it be there. Watch with the sound turned down. Your thoughts are like your life. You don’t get to pick and choose who comes into your life but you do get to choose who stays. You do get to choose who and what affects you and how deep. This is us meditating and not letting our thoughts control us. Take 5 minutes or 2 minutes. Don’t force it. Some days you can meditate longer, some days shorter. Just make the connection every day.
Write down that you meditated today and say “Thank you, I needed that time for myself”. Drop that bitch in your Sanity Bank!
