My friend called me and asked if I would be interested in doing a dessert with an ‘interesting concept’. I am not going to lie, it’s not in my nature. Unless it’s about how awesome I am. So I will tell you, I do not like being put on the spot. On stage. Surprises. So, I was super nervous. What was she up to? This girl can’t be trusted. I knew damn well she signed me up already anyway.
She tells me that they wanted some chef’s to come up with desserts that reminded them of their childhood. It went like this:
HER: Hey, I got a cool project for you to do!
ME: (Jesus Christ! I say on the inside) Great! Lay it on me.
HER: A group of us at work had a great idea! To get some chef’s to create desserts that remind them of their childhood.
HER: Yeah, you know, like when you eat it, it reminds you of your childhood.
ME: So….You mean you want a dessert that reminds you of shag carpeting, paneled walls and smells like dog piss and cigarettes?
HER: *long pause*… uh, well, I guess if that’s what reminds you of your childhood?
ME: Is my dad going to be there and tell you eating that is why you’re too fat to play T-ball?
HER: *excited* You think he would do that?
ME: I’ll give him a call.
I really couldn’t turn down this project. It’s one of those things I live for. Give me a thought and let me run. Gus doesn’t like boundaries. So I ran like a mofo!!! For me, one of the best things about growing up as a little fat boy was Saturday mornings sitting in front of the TV with my cereal watching my cartoons. I’m a big fan of the Smurf’s to this very day. To do a dessert resembling cereal and milk with the occasional banana chopped in it, depending if dad put in overtime that week, was a
right my alley. Just like the alley I grew up on.
The lemongrass panna cotta has a thin layer of Juicy Fruit bubble gum gelee across the top before placing on the caramelized Rice Krispies. In case you haven’t noticed I love those ingredients that make a dish pop but you can’t really put your finger on them. The Juicy Fruit gelee does just that and I love it for that.
I am truly proud and in love with this dessert, although I don’t see it going on a menu anytime soon. The flavors gel so well and it’s not crazy sweet and it’s light in the belly. I think it would look really cool in a small glass for a dinner party so you can see the layers. Look for it at our party in October!!
In the end, my dad declined to do the event with us. Even though it would have been hilarious to see some random guy walking around growling at people about getting fat for eating desserts, my dad is just too damn nice. He can’t be mean even if it’s for comedy. It’s a damn shame. But I still love the guy!!
