When I was a fat kid growing up, I couldn’t wait to get home from school to catch reruns of Laverne & Shirley. I thought they were hilarious and I loved the physical comedy aspect of the tomfoolery those girls got into. I remember Laverne always drank her milk and Pepsi concoction. Even though I was a huge consumer of Pepsi, I never tried the milk and Pepsi cocktail until a friend convinced me that it was actually pretty good. You know what? It really is.
I was working in Chile at Mapuyampay for my good friends Ruth and Vicente when Ruth pulled out her Tres Leche cake recipe for cooking class. Now, Ruth knows Tres Leche is my baby, but as usual, Ruth has to do me one better. Ruth’s Tres Leche, of course, came out amazing with the perfect texture and balance of sweetness. Damn her and her skills!!! When out of the blue the Laverne & Shirley idea hit me. I thought it was genius!! I imagined Ruth and Vicente would embrace me and pat me on the back and be all proud. Not so much. Ruth gave me the look my mom gives me, that “I raised you better than that” look. Vicente, well, I thought he was going to hurt me. Crazy, but I was being serious. Ruth thought I went even further out of my mind. She relayed this message to Julia and Rosa in Spanish. I don’t speak Spanish but when they started laughing it gave me the impression they thought I was an idiot. I’m cool with that.
Here is my Laverne’s Tres Leche using Ruth’s recipe with the addition of Pepsi and I’m damn proud of it!! Couple of my friends have tried it and liked it. I like it myself… a lot actually. Pepsi gives it that I-can’t-put-my-finger-on-it-but-I-like-it flavor. I can’t wait to pull this one out at our next BBQ. I’m not sure when that will be so if you’re having a BBQ in the NY area anytime soon let me know I’ll drop one by. First ones free!!!
